The Point Partners with Park Avenue

7 09 2010

The Point church converged on Park Avenue School this morning to give out 400+ backpacks to the 1st grade & Special Ed.  Wow.  We saw so many smiles from the students and received too many “thank yous” from students & faculty.  What a morning to continue our Servolution series.

Here’s a few pics from the day …

Point Church – WE did it!  Thanks for your time, donations and prayers!

Last Day

2 09 2010

Can’t believe that it is September.  Unbelievable!  Today was our last day handing out breakfast bars for the summer.  Not gonna lie – I am a little disappointed!  Love meeting new people and demonstrating the love of Christ.

Today was so cool for the following reasons:

  • A gentleman said to me, “You are my favorite person.”  Serving makes a huge difference.  It is simply about making someone feel valued.
  • One of the cabbies told us, “Thanks for spending your mornings with us,” as we were walking away.  We gave them bfast every Thursday for the last 5 weeks!
  • Seeing people smile.  I love that feeling that you helped someone start the day off right!
  • Repeat Outreach.  People know us now.  Very cool.  Love the vibe that they give when they show appreciation for being served – with NO strings attached.
  • It starts my day off on a buzz.  I am always flying after we do an outreach.  No matter what it is!  I am flying high today.
  • We are following the Great Commission of GOING … not waiting for people to come to us.  That’s how Jesus did it.

Already thinking about some upgrades for next year!

What will The Point do next???  Hhhmmm … got some ideas!!!!

I Just Got Served

21 08 2010

Servolution has been amazing.  Our staff has been working our tails off serving the people of Westbury!  I have met so many new faces and I love it.  It is what I love doing!  Plus so many people from The Point have been finding creative ways to serve and we are hearing the stories.

Here’s one …

Someone this week got creative.  Eileen Alejandro approached the human resources department where she works and told them she would like to do a fundraiser for our Backpack outreach to the students of Park Avenue School.  The Chubb Insurance Company is throwing a “Jeans Day” – basically employees can wear jeans to work by simply donating $5 to our Backpack Outreach!  Wow.  That is amazing!  Love the vision of people from The Point!

Plus you get some Servolution perks along the way.  Some great friends served our family by buying us tickets to the Jonas Brothers Concert Sunday at Jones Beach.  Malachi’s first concert and he is pumped … I have to admit it, but so am I.

FREE to Serve

19 08 2010

Galatians 5:13:  “For you have been called to live in freedom–not freedom to satisfy your sinful nature, but freedom to serve one another in love” (NLT).

Service all starts with love … a love for Christ, a love for the Church, a love for our Community and a love for others!  I believe our willingness to serve is directly connected to LOVE!

When we fail to do all that God has wired us for we will feel empty inside … and we can try and fill that emptiness with relationships, money, alcohol, sex or anything else … but at the end of the day we still feel empty because we are not doing what God made us to do!

Here’s a thought I read recently:  “Most people wish to serve God, but only in an advisory capacity only.”

Check this verse out … Deuteronomy 10:12:  “And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul” (NIV).

REAL SERVICE comes from 2 places:

  • Heart … the place where ‘belief’ happens
  • Soul … the place where ‘behavior’ happens

Let me give you a spiritual equation:  Belief + Behavior = Full Life Service (Ministry)

No where in this passage do we read about OUTCOME … we read about investments in simple SERVICE to God with every thing that we have.

That’s why we must SERVE.  We believe Jesus served but we must behave like Jesus too!  It’s not either-or, it is both-and.  Find someone and serve them with love!

“A servant enjoys being a ladder-holder, not having to be a ladder-climber” (Dino Rizzo)

Devin Webb @ The Point

18 08 2010

I am pretty excited about having my friend, Devin Webb, leading worship this Sunday @ The Point.  He is an incredible musician and worship leader.  He definitely has some BIG pipes – translation = “he can flat out sing.”  Bring a family member or friend.

Our Worship Arts Team is serving at the Organic Church in Bronxville, NY as part of their SERVOLUTION.  Organic Church is pastored by Rich Hoffman & his amazing wife, Vicki.  They are bringing a new church with a great passion for their city to Bronxville.  We are excited to serve along Pastor Rich.

Sunday Recap

16 08 2010

Wow.  Sunday can be an extremely long day at The Point.  It is exhausting, but well worth the effort and energy that everyone puts out.  Nick Osso rocked Servolution Part 2 by talking about “Finding the Needs” – 1. Ask  2.  Look  3.  Listen.  Pretty simple, but powerful.  Micki, Sebastian and Danny rocked worship – acoustic style!

Then we hustled off to our Pool Baptism.  25 people showed up.  1 got baptized.  Only 1?  Yep, but it is well worth it.  Water Baptism is never about the volume of people it is about the voice of a person screaming, “I Love Jesus.”  So privileged to baptize my friend, Jeff Owen.  Awesome!!!

The day started at 6:15 am and I landed home at 8:30 pm.  I came home and crashed hard.  Long day, but well worth the work.

Servolution Sideshows

12 08 2010

I love Westbury!  Our city is filled with amazing people!  As I continue to get to know more and more I embrace this place that God has called our family to!  This morning our Interns joined my Asst and myself with Kara Cook to serve breakfast bars to commuters heading into work!  We served about 200 people with breakfast bars and invite cards. We could have done more but ran out of breakfast bars – this won’t happen next week!!!

It is so cool to see how a smile and a free gift can put a smile on someone’s face.

Kara was giving out a breakfast bar and “you got served” card and the person asked, “If this was the same church that did the Easter Egg Hunt @ Eisenhower Park?”  Yep that was us.  We are saturating our community!  Our city will know!!!  I love that.  That is so amazing!

Okay … here’s the weird thing … after serving we went out to the Post Avenue Cafe for some breakfast.  We had a great conversation with the waitress.  She was chatting with Kara and it got very interesting.  So I asked her, “What do you think I do for a living?  I’ll give you three guesses.”

The sideshow begins ……..

Here’s her three guesses:

  • Counselor (close)
  • Not gay, because you are married (she saw the ring on my finger)
  • Stripper (whoa – this is way out there)

Needless to say, when we handed her the “You Got Served” Invite Card she said, “Oh no, you are not.”  I responded, “Yep I am a pastor.”  ”You would probably be a cool pastor,” Natalia, our waitress, replied.  Gave her a GREAT tip and laughed together.  I think we will see her at The Point.

Here’s the point –> Find creative ways to share your story – to spread the Word – to demonstrate God’s love – to serve your city.  There are opportunities all around us – go after them!!!  Break the ice and let God use you.
